Sankalpa – The Power of Resolve

I hope this blog finds you well and optimistic about the opportunities ahead in 2019.  I hope that for you life in 2019 and beyond will be prosperous, healthy, fun and happy.

Each New Year is a time to start afresh. What happened or didn’t happen for you in the past year, or in the years before, can’t be undone. You future, however, is unwritten. We’re almost two weeks into 2019 and many people have already broken their new year’s resolution. Research by the University of Scranton suggests that one third of people have abandoned their resolutions by the second week in February and only 8% of people who make resolutions achieve them.

There is a science to the process of manifesting your intention and intentions often fail because they are not well-formed - often they are no more than a vague wish with no commitment behind them.

Sankalpa - Power of Resolve

Vedic tradition, which forms the root of yoga philosophy, states that the most profound way to write your future is by harnessing the power of intention or resolution, which is called Sankalpa in Sanskrit.
San means an idea or concept formed in the heart and kalpa a way of proceeding or the rule to be observed above or before any other. In order to make meaningful progress towards a goal the power of resolve is required (called sankalpa shakti - the power of will and determination).

  1. How does this translate into everyday action or behaviour?  It means that you must make a decision as to whether you want the desire enough to fully align all your energies with it; physical, mental, emotional, financial and spiritual.
  2. You make the decision because you would love the outcome and you are absolutely determined  and committed to achieving it. That’s not enough, however.
  3. You must also bring your thoughts and actions into harmony, get organised and take daily action.  Thoughts are powerful and each thought that you have creates a vibration that helps to mould your future.  The Buddha said: “The mind is everything. What you think you become.”

What needs to happen to get your thoughts and energies flowing together and lined up with each other?
