Goals 2018: That all important first step

Goals, dreams...some of us are really skilled at manifesting what we want in life and others more scattered and not as good at crossing the goal winning line.

This is day 3 of 2018 and there are another 362 days to go. What are your plans for those 362 days? What are the things that you would like to have happen? Who do you want to be moving forward?

This could be that all-important first step toward creating what you desire.

Too many people hope and dream, but don’t take the action to get ahead. I’m urging you to take action today on your goals  if you've not already done so.

Often we get caught up in our past and forget that at the end of each day we can wipe the slate clean and start the next day afresh. Even better, at the start of the new year, we can do an ever bigger slate wiping.

Until a few years ago, I never really set a vision or certainly didn't proclaim what I wanted to create in this life time to others. I did most things subtly, meaning kind of quietly, because unconsciously, I worried about other people's opinions of what I did. Are you like that?

I didn't have people around me who set and talked about their vision and hidden deep inside was a feeling that I dare not ask for what I wanted because of the many refusals and negatives I received when I asked as a child. This resulted in a sense of don't ask because you won't get what you want. Often we bring these kinds of limiting beliefs into adulthood and they unconsciously trip us up.

I know better now because I know from experience that I can get what I want. So for this new year, 2018, I've revised, re-affirmed and added to my vision because I do have one and I can proclaim it. What is your vision for 2018 and beyond.

If you've not already sat down and spent some time identifying your desires and dreams for 2018 it's not too late.

Create a vision board. All you need to do is cut out pictures of what you want your life to look like and put the pictures on a board or something similar. It's what you want. Don't allow 'shoulds' and “can'ts” to limit you. Honour what you want. Be adventurous with the possibilities.

This takes some effort. I did this on New Year's Eve and found it very inspiring and motivating. Place the board where you will see it daily. By looking at your vision each day, you will have direction and keep your momentum going.

Looking at my vision board right now – it's above my desk – I can see that there are two strands to it. There are two areas that I've established – personal and professional - and the two are closely connected. There is only one unique me. Like there is a holistic unique you.

Personally, I'm focusing on my well-being and being more disciplined this year. It's about raising my standards in all aspects of my life.
So that means sticking to my healthy eating by cooking more (I'm very lazy about cooking), muscle mass building so more weights workouts, better timekeeping and sticking to deadlines and having more simple fun times.

It amazes me how many times I read people's hands and it shows that they are not having much fun in their lives. In hand analysis, there is an area in the hands named after the goddess archetype Venus. It symbolises pleasure, luxury, fun, sensuality, self-care activities. I find that many people, especially women, are undernourished in the fun and pleasure areas of their lives.

And when I ask what they know about this, they usually say that they are so busy working and looking after others that their self-care and pampering gets neglected.
Professionally, my focus is on being more visible and especially highlighting hand analysis and being more consistent in completing tasks.
It is my responsibility to uplift and guide more people with the scientific hand analysis tool. So this is my goal for 2018. It's something that really makes my heart and soul sing.

At the end of each purpose or personality reading, I feel inspired by the possibilities and capabilities that the hands uncover for people. And when they tell me that it has boosted their self confidence and allowed them to think bigger about what they want, I know that this is a service I must sing about. And that the people who I can help with scientific hand analysis are waiting for it.

What do you want personally and professionally this year? How will you make your mark in the world. What kind of mark or difference do you want to make? Do you know where you are going to? The lyrics from Diana Ross's song (theme from Mahogany) just slipped into my mind. It seems apt to quote a few verses now:

Do you know where you're going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you
Where are you going to?
Do you know?

Do you get
What you're hoping for
When you look behind you
There's no open door
What are you hoping for?
Do you know?”

And this verse also:

“Now looking back at all we've planned
We let so many dreams
Just slip through our hands
Why must we wait so long
Before we'll see
How sad the answers
To those questions can be”

So, do you know where you are going? Do you have a vision? Looking back at 2017, are your answers sad or uplifting.

Personally, I did what I consider game-changing things in 2017. I totally got out of my comfort zone getting into the trenches, cold calling (knocking doors uninvited) and helping people who mainly felt that they had little to offer employers or the world to see their gifts and the contributions they can make from where they are now. I stepped up from doing my mini-half day retreats to weekend and now weekly retreats overseas – I have an upcoming week-long retreat in Goa in March 2018 for example.

What are your big wins of 2017? The things that created a sense of joy and inner blooming. What did your soul light up about?

Before creating my vision board I acknowledged all my big wins of 2017 and used a feedback tool to compassionately look at the things that didn't work so well and what I can do differently next time.

The vision is the starting point. You also need to get clear about what making your vision a reality will give you. What are your reasons for wanting what you desire?

These reasons will propel you forward into action and keep you motivated when challenges rear their heads.

You then need to break it down into manageable, implementable pieces. When I worked in information technology, there was a tool called a function hierarchy diagram that was great for decomposing goals/projects etc. into smaller action steps. The principles of this model are useful. Here's what to do...

At the top of a piece of paper/electronic document write down what you want to create (vision/goals). Then below it write the 5-7 key components required to get there. Order them according to priority, Then decompose the most important components and so on. What are the starting actions, entry level actions, transitional steps towards your dream or goals? Write them down.

Create a weekly schedule that will prioritise the actions you need to take to achieve your goals. Each day set the outcome for the day. What actions do you need to take. I do this immediately after my 15-minute morning meditation when my mind is calm and clear.

I'm starting a programme in mid-January for you if you need support and help gaining clarity about what you want and how to go about getting it. See the end of the blog for more details.

A really effective outcome model (devised by Caitlin Walker) consists of 3 easy steps. Ask yourself:

1. For your day to be just as you want it to be it will be like what. Here I like to list the key things to achieve during the day – normally 2-3 items. I ask myself clarifying questions to flesh out the details of the actions.
2. How do you need to be to get the outcome from 1 above? This is an important question to answer because it shows that you are responsible for the outcome, not someone else. It's about who you want to be and how you want to show up in the world and personally. More clarifying questions are asked here.
3. What support or resources do you need for 1 and 2 above? Here you can list practical things that are required. Do you need help from other people. What help? Do you require specific equipment etc.

This process only needs to take a few minutes. It's great for setting the flow of the day and help you keep moving towards achieving your goals. If you want a day when things take place with ease you explore what that ease will look/feel/sound like.

You have 362 days left. Please map out your goals and what you want to create. You are here to serve a purpose on the planet just like everyone else. That's how important you are. What is your mission? What do you want?
