Mind Your thoughts. Be vigilant about your thoughts in life as well as in your yoga practice. I cannot count the number of times that yoga students tell themselves and me that they “can’t” do a posture or they can’t breathe properly. Can’t, can’t, can’t…
But what impact does this have on the psyche. Much research shows that the mind does not deal with negatives. So when you repeatedly tell yourself that you can’t do something, the mind assumes that you don’t want what you say you can’t do and you strengthen the neural pathways in the brain connected with can't do this thing making it into a habitual way of thinking and responding to situations and opportunities.
Thus, you may want to do Sun Salutations well, or to get more length in your hamstrings, or to excel at something. But if you tell yourself that you can’t have it, then how can you make it happen.
This kind of conundrum is demonstrated in “Knots” by R.D Laing:
I never got what I wanted.
I always got what I did not want.
What I want I shall not get.
Therefore, to get it, I must not want it
since I get only what I don’t want.
What I want, I can’t get
What I get, I don’t want
…
Your mind and body work together. In order to get what you want, tell yourself that you can have it and crucially you must be fully aligned with what you want. If you say you want something and you think or feel that you won't get it then it's unlikely to manifest.
