Setting Outcomes or Goals

Setting outcomes or goals is something that we like to do towards the end of a year or the beginning of a new year. If you’ve already worked through a process and have your outcomes worked out for 2019 that’s great. If not, then a very simple process, devised by Caitlin Walker, that I use myself and when coaching clients that I call the Outcome Creator can help you with setting outcomes and to get clear about what you would like for 2019. It consists of  3 steps. Ask yourself the following questions ( or you can do this with someone else where they ask you the questions).

“Is there anything else about what I’d like for 2019?” Ask yourself this question another 4 times, even if your mind is telling you that there isn’t anything else, and write/draw whatever comes to you.  Somethign unexpected can emerge from your subconscious mind that has a big impact on your setting outcomes results.

“Is there anything else about what I’d like?”
“Is there anything else about what I’d like?”
“Is there anything else about  what I’d like?”
“Is there anything else about what I’d like?”

Note that you end up asking the question six times.  What is so special about six? Philip Harland in his book “The Power of Six” points out that “six is a rule of thumb that governs the number of data points required for information to reach a critical mass. It has been shown to be pervasive throughout nature, problem solving and social interactions.”  When you ask the question six times you are creating the possibility for new information or knowledge to emerge.

Now ask yourself, “How do I need to be to get the outcome(s) from 1?”   Once you have something write it down or draw it and  ask “Is there anything else about how I need to be?”

Write/draw the answer. Ask this question another 4 times noting down/adding to your picture after each iteration of the question.

Finally, ask yourself: “What support or resources will I need for 1 and 2 above to happen?”  Write down or add this information to your drawing.  Support could be an accountability partner, a book,  something that you watch,  daily inspirational quotes, computer, transport, etc

Now, ask yourself:  “Is there any other resource or support that I will need?”  Write/add it to  your picture. Ask the question four more times.

You now have more clarity about how you would like your year to be having carried out the setting outcomes process,  you’ll be taking responsibility for making it happen as well as seeking the support/resources that you will need to help you on your journey to your desired outcome.

The key to manifesting and making real what you want is first to know what you want, then to believe that you can achieve it before it becomes reality and to line up your energy and emotions with your desires. You must also take action - make that phone call, attend that event or training course, read that book, talk to your boss, move your desk…

There is a strong gravitational pull towards your comfort zone and if you do not take regular action,   two or three weeks later you can be back to what is your “normal comfort zone” and often unhelpful thinking and behaviour patterns.
