Day 18 Sutras 2:49 The [firm posture] being acquired, the movement of inhalation and exhalation should be controlled. This is pranayama.
Pranayama is the fourth limb of yoga. Patanjali says that we are ready to practice this controlled regulation of the inhalation and exhalation after a reasonable mastery of asana practice.
Prana is life force or cosmic force and by regulating prana, the mind can also be stilled. There are many forms of pranayama and most should be learned fro a skilled teacher.
