Spirituality and quantum physics are on the same page. What! Spirituality and science meet at the same point. The law of attraction tells us to “ask and it is given”. Decide what you desire/want, ask for it, get into vibrational alignment and it will manifest. You ask and align vibrationally and leave it to the universe to manifest. This does not mean that you do not take action. The 'Secret' got heavily criticised for implying that we just have to put in our request without taking action on the ideas and plans. Many people are highly sceptical and think this is woo woo stuff.
What does science say?
Quantum physics says whether something is energy (waves) or physical matter (particles) depends on the mind of the observer. When you observe something you bring it into existence. Is that crazy or what?
I'm Not in Control
It seems that the 17th century mathematician and philosopher, Rene Descartes, is largely responsible for our dualistic thinking (science v spirituality). He started a belief system that the world is mechanistic – like a machine - and stated that the study of matter (the physical world) was the jurisdiction of science and the study of the mind was the realm of religion. For centuries this was the accepted world view of the nature of reality.
Then along came Sir Isaac Newton (mathematician and scientist) who further perpetuated Descartes beliefs that the world was like a machine. He devised a set of laws about the material world stating that human beings could accurately determine, calculate and predict the orderly ways in which the physical world operate.
Why am I talking about Cartesian (Descartes) and Newtonian belief systems?
Because of the mind-set that their work established, a mind-set that has been dominant for centuries. This mind-set says that if reality is predetermined and the world/reality is driven by mechanistic principles, then humans have little influence on outcomes.
Think about it for a moment – it is no wonder that people struggle with the idea of free will and think that their thoughts and actions don't matter. If your thoughts and actions do not matter then (consciously or subconsciously) perhaps you are not responsible for your life; you are a victim.
Can you relate to this thought-form?
You are “ no thing”
Some 200 years later, this view was shattered when Einstein (and other scientists) demonstrated that physical matter and energy are the same. Quantum physicists entered the fray telling us that the fundamental components of our physical world are both energy and physical matter. Reality is not mechanistic. And astonishingly revealing that whether something is energy (waves) or physical matter (particles) depends on the mind of the observer.
Let me repeat that another way. Your thoughts affect what you perceive. Now that's a turn-up for the books. Atoms (building blocks of all physical things) are actually energy (mostly empty space). You and I are made up of atoms, so by extension we are energy – empty space, “no thing” and our thoughts are also energy.
The magical thing about what quantum physics has revealed is that at the subatomic level (subatomic refers to the parts that make up atoms – electrons, protons, neutrons...), everything comes into existence when it is observed.
Everything in the universe is made up of subatomic particles such as electrons and exist in a wave or energy state when they are not being observed. In this wave state there is only pure potential – infinite possibility or probability in an invisible field of energy. As Dr Joe Dispenza puts it:
'They are potentially “everything” and “no thing” until they are observed. They exist everywhere and nowhere until they are observed. Thus everything in our physical reality exists as pure potential.'
Quantum physic experiments show that your mind influences the appearance of an electron. They call this the “observer effect” or “collapse of the wave function”.
So in plain language this means that if a subatomic particle exists in different possible places at the same time in an invisible state and by observing it, we can collapse it into reality/existence in an infinite number of possible experiences, then we get what we focus on.
How many times have you heard/read that? Many, many times for me, but without the scientific slant. If you can imagine a desired outcome that you want and that matters to you, that reality already exists as a possibility in the quantum field, waiting for you to observe it – think about it, visualise it, see it, feel it, touch it, hear it, taste it, want it, desire it...
What is the observer? Your mind. The energy of infinite possibilities is shaped by your mind, by your consciousness. And your consciousness is itself energy. You live in a vibrational universe and you are a vibrational being. The invisible realm that quantum physicists call the 'field' shapes the physical world. Thoughts are energy. What emerges from the invisible realm is shaped by consciousness/mind. The mind/body affects the physical world. There is no separation.
This is kind of mind blowing! Woo woo and quantum physics are the same.
“ Ask and it is Given”
So back to the Law of Attraction. It says that everything is a vibrational interpretation. You get what you focus on. Because of your focus, you get to choose where you place your attention. Focus and attention give you basic freedom. If you focus on what you want: money, prosperity, love, happiness, joy, health, real you...and align vibrationally with that outcome (and take action) it happens. A big dollop of faith and alignment is required.
The Law of attraction is inclusive...if you focus on what you want, you get that. If you focus on what you don't want, you get that.
Quantum physics says that you influence energy into matter by observing...using the mind and consciousness (also energy) to manifest possibilities in the 'field' of probabilities into physical experiences or events in your life.
These infinite probabilities are available to you, me and everyone on the planet.
I Can't Get Out of My Head
If it's as simple as “Ask and it is Given”, why do so many of us wallow in the space of lack instead of possibilities?
Eckhart Tolle says, most people's “attention is absorbed by thinking that's not relative to anything”. The mind draws you here, there and everywhere. You are at the mercy of your thoughts. There is little or no conscious focusing of the mind towards some creative endeavour that will activate or align with something in the quantum field.
Esther and Jerry Hicks in their book “Ask and it is Given” provide what I find is a beautifully simple way to know whether you are in alignment with what you desire or not (thanks for introducing me to this book, Maria Athayde).
What is this system?
Your feelings. How you are feeling from moment to moment. They call your feelings your emotional navigational system. Tune into yourself. If your feel good you're in alignment. If you don't feel good you are probably out of alignment. Even better, if the thought you are thinking feels good then you are aligned. If the thought doesn't feel good, you don't feel good and voilà you are out of alignment.
I really love the idea of being mindful of whether the thought feels good. Self-awareness is required. You need to be present enough to notice your thoughts. I was watching a video with Eckhart Tolle recently and made a note of his comment that “most people are hardly here”. If you are hardly here, you're unlikely to pay much attention to how you feel when you are thinking thoughts.
I've been practising noticing how my thoughts feel. When you stick to 'does this thought feel good to me or not, shift happens and there is movement away from negativity and lack. It can take a lot of persistence to keep to thoughts that feel good. I can go into rumination mode when something happens that feels out of alignment/inauthentic. Neural pathways can be very strong.
For example, just this week, I've been grappling with an emotional authenticity issue regarding someone who I'm deciding whether I want to be remain friends with or not/spend lots of time around. I've been very aware of these thoughts coming up and they do not feel good. If I pay attention to them, then more similar thoughts are activated in my vibrational field and on and on...
As you know trying to suppress unwanted thoughts taps into that vibration. The way out was to decide what I want to have happen. These were my feelings, self-generated and I can change what I think/how I respond. The person is a good person with certain behaviours that I don't like. I changed to the story of what I want – spending less time in that person's company. End of story.
2 Steps to Getting More of What You Want
-
Decide on your outcome – what you would like to have happen
-
Sharpen your self-awareness and become aware of your alignment with that outcome:
Start by simply noticing what you focus on. Where do you place your attention? Is it on what you desire or on what you do not want? This is mindfulness.
